When CPA on Fire founder, Josh Bauerle decided to train for his first marathon, he didn’t expect it to become a masterclass in balance—both personally and professionally.
A lot of business owners like myself begin pursuing freedom and flexibility, but eventually, the grind takes over. Josh’s training forced him to let go of the constant urge to answer every email or text immediately. And guess what? The world didn’t end. Sometimes, stepping back is exactly what we need to move forward—and that’s the essence of balance.
Be Intentional with Your Time
Marathon training is a lesson in intentionality. Josh had to carefully plan his runs, work hours, and family time, proving that balance isn’t accidental—it’s deliberate. The same applies to business: if you don’t set boundaries, work can consume your life. He also learned to filter distractions, whether it was advice from non-runners or flashy social media hacks. Sticking to a clear plan and focusing on what truly mattered kept him on track. In entrepreneurship, it’s easy to get derailed by the latest trends or advice, but true balance comes from staying focused on your goals.
Surround Yourself with the Right People
Another critical lesson was the importance of the right support system. Josh leaned on seasoned runners for guidance, just like entrepreneurs should turn to others who’ve been in their shoes. The key to balance is surrounding yourself with people who genuinely understand your challenges. Be selective about whose advice you take—listen to those who’ve walked the path, not just anyone offering opinions. Whether you’re training for a marathon or building your business, clarity, intentionality, and the right community are the foundation of balance.
Heading into 2025, if you don’t have a clear plan, now is the time to reset. Success—like balance—requires focus, boundaries, and consistency. Make space for what matters, and you’ll find yourself moving forward with purpose.
