This year, Josh, our Founder, ran his first marathon, and the journey taught him some powerful lessons that resonate with running a business. We talked about how training for 26.2 miles is a lot like building a successful company, and it requires dedication, perseverance, and adaptability.
Here are four key takeaways that can help you run the race of entrepreneurship with purpose and confidence.Setting clear, measurable goals.
Trusting the process, even when it feels daunting.
Learning, adapting, and course-correcting as needed.
Building confidence one win at a time.
Setting Clear, Measurable Goals
When committing to the marathon, he set two specific goals: finish under four hours and never stop to walk. Those goals kept him focused and motivated. In business, having clear, measurable objectives is equally important. Instead of vague aspirations like "grow the business," define your milestones. Maybe it’s reaching $1 million in revenue by 2025 or increasing profitability to 28%. With a clear finish line in mind, you can map out the steps to get there.
Trusting the Process, Even When It Feels Daunting
The first eight weeks of training were tough. After barely completing an 11-mile run, there were doubts whether I could finish the marathon. But he stayed the course and followed his plan. By week eight, something clicked, and his pace and endurance improved dramatically. In business, early setbacks can feel overwhelming, but trusting your process and sticking with it often leads to breakthroughs. Give your strategies time to work before jumping ship.
Learning, Adapting, and Course-Correcting as Needed
Midway through training, he realized the need for fueling and hydration strategies. Small tweaks—like using energy chews and carrying a handheld drink—made a huge difference. In business, adaptation is just as vital. Pay attention to what’s not working and adjust. Whether it’s refining your product, shifting marketing efforts, or reallocating resources, staying flexible ensures steady progress toward your goals.
Building Confidence One Win at a Time
A turning point for him came after a 14-mile run when he hit a faster pace than expected. That boosted his confidence and proved that his goal was achievable. Similarly, in business, celebrating small victories builds momentum. Each milestone, whether it’s landing a new client or hitting a revenue target, reinforces your ability to succeed and pushes you closer to the finish line.
Running a marathon and building a business both require long-term commitment and focus. By setting clear goals, trusting the process, adapting when necessary, and celebrating wins, you can tackle even the most daunting challenges. Success might not happen overnight, but with perseverance, you’ll eventually cross the finish line.
