We’re kicking off our breakdown of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” with a clear, practical snapshot. There’s a lot packed into this, but we’ll be walking through it piece by piece—highlighting what really matters for your finances and how it could affect your wallet.

The Standard Deduction Is Getting a Major Bump

This new law would increase the standard deduction significantly across the board. Here’s how the numbers stack up:

  • Single / Married Filing Separately (MFS): $12,000 → $15,750
  • Head of Household: $18,000 → $23,625
  • Married Filing Jointly (MFJ): $24,000 → $31,500

That’s more of your income shielded from taxes—automatically.

Even better, the adjustment will be based on 2024 inflation levels instead of 2017, which means the annual increases going forward will more accurately reflect the cost of living today.

The Child Tax Credit Is Getting a Boost

Families with children will also see some changes to the Child Tax Credit:

  • Maximum credit per child: $2,000 → $2,200
  • Refundable portion: stays at $1,400 but will now be inflation-adjusted moving forward
  • Eligibility: A valid Social Security Number will be required for both the taxpayer (or one spouse) and the qualifying child

While the increase is modest, the inflation adjustment means families could see the credit grow over time—helping to offset taxes or add a little extra cushion to their refunds each year.

What This Means for You

On paper, these may seem like small adjustments, but for many households, they add up. A higher standard deduction automatically reduces your taxable income, while an enhanced Child Tax Credit gives families more relief and predictability year after year.

Looking Ahead

The Big Beautiful Bill has many moving parts, and these are just the first two. We’ll continue breaking it down in bite-sized updates so you’re never caught off guard.

Next up: Could tips and overtime really become tax-free? Stay tuned.
